According to the World Bank Poverty and Equity Brief for October 2026, India has witnessed inclusive progress driven by strong consumption growth, rising employment, especially among women, and expanded social transfers.
🔹496 million people moved above the lower-middle-income poverty line of $4.20 a day between 2011 and 2023.
🔹 Poverty fell from 57.7% to 16.1% in this period.
🔹 Extreme poverty declined from 27.1% to 2.6% in the same period.
🔹 Employment increased by 134 million people between 2017 and 2023, nearly twice the increase in the working-age population.
🔹 Access to electricity reached 99% of the population, according to the report’s 2022 survey data.
